Alcoholic AnonymousTradition 3 - The only requirement for A.A. membership is a desire to stop drinking. Al-AnonTradition 3 - The relatives of alcoholics, when gathered together for mutual aid, may call themselves an Al-Anon Family Group, provided that, as a group, they have no other affiliation. The only requirement for membership is that there be a problem of alcoholism in a relative or friend. Both Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon open their doors and offer fellowship to anyone who fits the eligibility outlined in Tradition 3 and generally leave that determination up to the individual. Basically those who attend these 12 step meetings either feel a sense of belonging or they do not and move on. The reason that Tradition 3 was emphasized by the founders of the twelve-step programs was to protect the fellowship from outside influences; to ensure that the meetings would maintain their primary focus and not be diluted by the influx of others issues or influences. Some old timers today believe that the fellowship has in fact been diluted by the inclusion into its meetings those who are primarily dealing with issues other than problems with alcohol, such as drug abuse. They feel that the program has gotten away from its spiritual foundations and primary purpose and may become diluted to the point of ineffectiveness. But there is always two sides to every issue. Visitors to this site have added their comments to this discussion on the bulletin board. Here are their observations: Freedom to Choose This one is pretty simple to me. I believe this tradition is just what it says: The only requirement is to have a desire to stop drinking. Some may not know or believe they are alcoholics but still wish to live a life free of alcohol. I have no quarrel with this. For those of us who are alcoholics and do not wish to share a meeting with those who are not, closed meetings are available. I would certainly hope that anyone who wishes to stop drinking will have the freedom to choose Alcoholics Anonymous as their means of support. Perhaps the word membership is the catch. One does not have to become a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. We still have freedom of choice. We must honor the closed meetings format to protect the spiritual foundation of anonymity. I would like to close with this. The founding fathers of AA learned through trial and error. I am a traditionalist at heart. I want AA to be here whenever someone reaches out for help. Just as it was for me. This is why the traditions were founded. I will protect them to the best of my ability. Magic Alcohol Is a Drug I feel that the principles are the same whether the abuser is abusing alcohol or drugs. Having had both types of abusers in my life, the program has not changed. Technically, alcohol is a drug. I have yet to meet an alcoholic who can play with drugs or vice versa. Not that I have been around all that long. The feelings are the same and so are the recovery techniques whether you call it Alanon or NarAnon. Debbi No Other Affiliation Im a grateful Al-Anon member. I believe this tradition is clear... its for anyone who has a friend or family member who has the problem of alcoholism. I never heard the suggestion that a substance abuser not be admitted. I would disagree. Perhaps the person is an abuser because they cant cope with a traumatic childhood due to alcoholism. Perhaps the person is an abuser to deaden the pain from an abusive alcoholic spouse. I think ALL should be welcome. Several people in face-to-face meetings Ive attended are double winners and that makes me proud. In the other section of this tradition... provided that they have no other affiliation... to me means keep it simple. I think it means meetings such as women in recovery or Christians in recovery... are going against this tradition because they have to first be affiliated with another group. Thats just MY interpretation of this tradition. Lin Let God Do the Judging My first time in A.A. I was only an alcoholic, I hadnt fooled with drugs (yet). But there were a lot of people coming in A.A. at the time who did have a drug problem, and I use to hear a lot of different talk about it. I also heard that it came down from the front office that we can and should help them also. My second time in A.A., thank God they didnt tell me that I wasnt welcome because now I was not only an alcoholic but messed up on drugs just as bad has booze. If we all work the 12 steps, in the same manner, it will work for the drugger just as well and like it was said before, alcohol is a drug. I have never met a drugger who didnt have a drinking problem also. I myself would never turn away a so-called drugger, they are one in the same. If a person doesnt belong in A.A. they weed themselves out. Would you belong to an overeaters program if you were skinny? A.A. has given me the tools to help people in life, not just if they are an Alcoholic or a drugger, but people in all walks of life. I am no judge to turn anybody away at any time. This is why we have closed meetings. Lets let God do the judging.

Meet Ashton, a rising 2L at Michigan State University (MSU) College of Law Ashton, thank you for sharing your story with us! I understand you were a STEM major in college. What inspired you to switch your focus and pursue a legal career? Ashton: As a college freshman, I did not know what I wanted to do with my career. I majored in Applied Mathematics and Spanish because those were two subjects I excelled in, but then realized at some point that I would need a job after graduation and that I did not want to apply to grad school in either of those subjects. I began looking into careers that math majors go into and law happened to be in the top five. What was the most challenging aspect of the law school application process? How did you face this challenge? Ashton: I would not say that any part of the process is necessarily challenging. The only bit of advice I would give to anyone going through the process is to ask your professors for recommendations early and give them a date that you need them by. How did you prepare for the LSAT? Was there a course, book, or website that you found particularly helpful? Ashton: Standardized tests have always been easier for me than others, so I did not feel like I needed to pay $1000+ for a prep course. However, I did go to Steve Schwartzs website. He has a list of practice test books and a guide to purchase. I believe I spent $10 on a 3-month study schedule. It was helpful for keeping me on track. How many law schools did you apply to? How was MSU a good fit for you? Ashton: I was planning to apply to Penn State and Rutgers if I did not get into MSU. I applied to MSU super early in case I didnt get in, but I did end up being accepted with a great scholarship. MSU was my top choice because that was the first school I visited before I even took the LSAT. The office was welcoming and already seemed extremely invested in helping me to achieve my goals. Do first-year students take electives? What are you most looking forward to? Ashton: First-year law students unfortunately do not have any electives. Next year, I am interested in taking Patent, Copyright, and Trademark Law. I am not sure Ill be able to fit them all in next year, but I do plan to take them all at some point. MSU offers a variety of interesting electives every year. Are you involved in any extracurricular activities on or off campus? Ashton: This year I joined four registered student organizations: Phi Alpha Delta, Womens Law Caucus, Latino Law Society, and the Intellectual Property Law Society. Over the next year I will be participating in a clinic, moot court, and I am currently in the application process for Law Review. Fingers crossed! Does your school provide opportunities for law students to engage in pro bono work? What are the MSU clinics? Ashton: Absolutely. There are several clinics here – I believe there are 9 or so. I am participating in the First Amendment Clinic this fall, in which I will be placed at a high school where I will be teaching students about copyright and other first amendment issues. Some of the other clinics are Civil Rights, Tax, Chance at Childhood, and Intellectual Property. Congratulations on being among the winners of the MSU Social Media Contest! Can you share a bit about this competition? Ashton: Thank you! I really didnt know what to expect going into the contest, all I knew was that I didnt have anything to lose since Im on social media all the time anyway. It turns out that the contest is what you make of it. At the beginning of the contest period, participants let the Career Services Office (CSO) know which platforms they would be using. I chose to use Twitter and LinkedIn. The competition is judged on building connections, generating engagements with posts, and marketing yourself online professionally. It was actually a lot of fun. What types of career services are available on campus? Ashton: MSU Law has a fantastic Career Services Office. Every advisor is prompt and eager to assist students. Additionally, the office has a website with job listings, internships, and information about on-campus interviews. Can you share a bit about the process of applying for internships? What aspects of your upcoming internships are you most excited about? Ashton: I expected to have fewer opportunities offered to me than I did, so I applied to close to 50 internships. I was offered 10-12 interviews, but only went to maybe 6-7 of them. I was offered all of them and had the best problem: choosing where I wanted to intern. A better problem to have but no less stressful. I am excited for the experiences I will gain and am open to anything and everything. Summer is around the corner. Where will you be interning this summer? Ashton: After I return from my study abroad in Japan, I will have two internships. I will be an intern in Judge Aquilinas office at the 30th Circuit Court in Ingham County and I will also be an intern at the Anti-Counterfeiting and Product Protection center on MSUs campus. I cant wait! Tell us about your study experience in Japan! Ashton: It is only my fourth day here, but I am loving it so far! I think I finally beat the jet lag. Im taking two courses which total five credits: Japanese Legal Studies and Law and Religion. Each class has no more than seven people and it has been a wonderful week so far. Traveling is something I love to do but I unfortunately have not had much of an opportunity to do so until the last couple of years. As a group we have visited Kiyomizu-dera, which is a Buddhist temple in Kyoto, and we were able to see Aoi Matsuri, one of the three major festivals in Kyoto. I plan to spend some time in Osaka, Hiroshima, and possibly Tokyo over the next few weeks. Where do you see yourself professionally, in 5 years from now? Which type of law would you most like to practice, and in what setting? Ashton: That is quite the question. In 5 years, I would like to be in a firm setting in Grand Rapids, MI. However, I am still exploring opportunities and I am open to new experiences. As of right now, I am interested in Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law. If you could share one message with applicants at the start of their law school journey, what would it be? Ashton: No one else knows what theyre doing either. Even the people that dont stop talking. Genocide is â€Å"the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, ethnic, political, or cultural group†. In Rwanda for example, the Hutu-led government embraced a new program that called for the country’s Hutu people to murder anyone that was a Tutsi (Gourevitch, 6). This new policy of one ethnic group (Hutu) that was called upon to murder another ethnic group (Tutsi) occurred during April through June of 1994 and resulted in the genocide of approximately 800,000 innocent people that even included women and children of all ages. In this paper I will first analyze the origins/historical context regarding the discontent amongst the Hutu and Tutsi people as well as the historical context as to why major players in the international†¦show more content†¦The Belgians also decreed that Tutsis should be the only ones in power and thus removed Hutus from positions of power and excluded them from higher education (Arraras). â€Å"By assuring the Tutsis’ monopoly of power the Belgians set the stage for future conflict in Rwanda† (Arraras). The Tutsis were enjoying their status as being superior to the Hutus but all that changed in 1959 with the Hutu revolution and so in 1960 and 1961 the Hutus won the elections. Since then, ethnic tensions had always been brewing between the Hutus and the Tutsis. However the tensions escalated when Rwandan President Juvenal Habyarimana, a Hutu, was shot down above Kigali airport on April 6, 1994. I consider this to be a form of political violence because someone or a group that opposed this President which represented only the political interests as well as the viability of the Hutus had to be killed in order for another group possibly the Tutsis to fill the vacuum of power left by the Hutu president. The Hutus blamed the assassination of their president on the Tutsis and in turn sparked an all out massacre waged on to the Tutsi people. Although it is sometimes viewed that major players in t he international community did not get involved in the conflict between the Hutus and the Tutsis I argue that in some form or fashion they did.
